Strand, Cape Town
Part of the Strand's Golden Mile
The False Bay coastline is dotted with small villages.
From the west we have, Muizenberg, Mitchells Plain, and Strandfontein to name but a few.
In the east we have Gordon's Bay and the Strand.
These little towns were first established way back in the 17th century by the Dutch who spent their holidays there.
Over the years they have grown slowly but have retained their sleepy hollow mentality and farming lifestyle.
To prove a point the bank that I worked for refused to fund housing loans for staff who wanted to buy property in these areas back in the 1970's.
They were scared that there would be no resale value for them.
The Strand has some of the most beautiful beaches to be found along the False Bay coastline.
At low tide the golden beaches are hundreds of metres wide in places and stretch for kilometres towards the west.
It's no surprise that of late the area has become very popular with investors.
The Strand's golden mile is where you will find some lovely beachfront apartments.
A number of them have sprung up over the past few years and land along this stretch of the coastline is at a premium.
With this sudden interest by local and foreign investors property values have increased by more than 300% over the past year or two.
The whole area including Somerset West is experiencing the property boom.
I'm just wondering whether the bank has changed its loans criteria yet!
One particularly large project is the 25 storey Topaz block which will be completed in August next year.
I can imagine that the views over False Bay and the surrounding areas will be quite spectacularfrom the top of one of South Africa's highest residential blocks.
The Strand coastline with its warm water not only provides good waves for surfers but a long coastline from which to catch fish.
False Bay is a nursery for many fish species and a playground for some of the larger predators such as the Great White Sharks.
Those fishermen brave enough to take on the predators have been limited to launching their boats from the Gordon's Bay harbour which used to be the only slipway available on the east coast of False bay.
Recently Harbour Island Marina and housing complex has been completed on the Strand coastline and provides another alternative for those wanting to launch their boats.
The outer wall of this harbour provides the locals with a good spot to fish into relatively deep water.
Other developments in the area are the building of a new retirement centre to be called Summervale and a golfing estate on the old Strand Golf course.
Putting up new buildings and providing accommodation in an area which is normally regarded as a sleepy hollow must have something else going for it to attract investors.
The Strand's proximity to the airport, the Stellenbosch Wine routes and the nearby Somerset Mall shopping complex( which is undergoing a 150 million rand facelift at the moment) are all factors making the Strand such a popular area today.
A secondary factor and one that will not last is that the new accommodation being provided is cheaper than similar projects being built on the west coast.
Are you an investor, why not take a look at the Strand coastline developments while the prices are still reasonable.
To take advantage, don't walk. “RUN”
